LINC
Talis plus:
·
Authority – Tasmania’s State Library comes
under the umbrella organisation known as LINC, which is supported by the
Tasmanian Department of Education. I consider this to be a high authority
source of information.
·
Currency – As new items are added to the
library catalogue the RSS feed will make my clients aware of them.
·
Relevance – Tasmania’s State Library is
available to everyone free of charge. Members may borrow selected items. The
collection includes more than 200,000 items in various formats; books, maps, magazines,
microfilms and audio visual material. This source is useful to my clients who
prefer written material compared to digital.
How To Plant Camellias:
·
Authority – This slide share is published in
an electronic magazine called Southern Living. This magazine includes advertisements
and other articles not related to gardening, such as travel and home decoration.
I consider this source to be low authority since there is no reference for the
information.
·
Currency – Published 2014, suitable to be
viewed by all ages
·
Relevance – The technique of planting a
camellia is the same throughout time. The soil must be prepared before planting
and mulch applied afterwards.
Camellia
Planting Guide:
·
Authority – This electronic article is
written by Steve Bender, who features in several articles and youtubes on the
topic of domestic gardening. I consider this to be a medium authority since it
is possible to follow links to other relevant information. Advertisments break
up the flow of information.
·
Currency – Published 2014, discusses several
aspects of plant care..
·
Relevance – Although it is located within
southern America the details of plant care are similar. Some diseases and plant
pests might not be relevant to Australia.
Camellias in the Rain:
· Authority – The authors are a senior citizen group who created this video out of a shared interest in gardens. The location is E.G. Waterhouse National Camellia Gardens, Caringbah NSW.
·Currency – It was made in 2012.
·Relevance – This video gives an idea of how Camellias can help to create a peaceful setting suitable for middle aged people. Paths help to divide the garden beds and maintain a feeling of privacy.
Classic
Camellias for Australian Gardens:
·
Authority – The author has worked as an
editor and book designer, a garden photographer and writer. Acknowledgements
are given to the Camellia Grove Nursery in Sydney, Rhodoglen nursery, Secret
Gardens of Sydney and several owners of private gardens.
·
Currency – This book was published in 2003 so
it is 11 years old but it is still a useful reference.
·
Relevance – This book has beautiful colour
photographs and has easy to read text. There is a brief description of each
variety and its growing habit. In particular I recommend the following pages,
pages 17-18 Camellias in Australia; page 18 Camellia Flowering Times within
Capital Cities; page 18 Gardening Advice; page 20 Planting a New Camellia; page
21 Mulching; page 23 Espaliers; page 24 Hedges and Standards; page 26
Containers; page 31 Classic Camellias.
Your
Garden:

number, fax and email given for the editorial section. Pacific Magazines are
the publishers. They have a phone number, a street address in Eveleigh NSW and
an ABN.
·
Currency - This magazine is produced
quarterly during the year.
·
Relevance – Apart from the articles that are
relevant to Australian gardening there are interesting advertisements, eg The
Diggers Club which propagates Australian heirloom seeds and plants. The regular
features are Gardening, Plants, Edibles, Gardens and Lifestyle.
Espalier

Your Garden which is a quarterly Australian magazine. They have a phone number,
a street address in Eveleigh NSW and an ABN.

The photos are excellent.
Trees
and Shrubs for Small Gardens:
·
Authority – The author acknowledges help from
the Editorial and research assistants from the Australian Correspondence
Schools; advice from Flemings Nursery, Silvan Victoria and the National
Herbarium, South Yarra, Victoria. Twelve other books were published by the same
author on related topics. There is a street address, phone and fax numbers, PO
Box address, websites and email addresses. So the author is willing to be
contacted.
·
Currency – The book was published in 2000 and
is 14 years old yet the plant classification details stay the same.
·
Relevance – This book is relevant to the
topic. One drawback is the small writing text which is hard to read even with
glasses. There is useful information on plant habitat and requirements. Part 1
is most useful as a practical guide for training plant growth, landscaping,
selection of plants, care of plants, control of pests and diseases, and plants
for specific purposes.

·
Currency – Although the image is 10 years old
it is an example of today’s Camellias.
·
Relevance – Camellias are abundant flowering
green shrubs. This image is a good example of the density of the plant and the brilliance
of colour.
